Check conditions before leaving
Look at air temperature, sun exposure and the route surface. If conditions are too hot, move the outing to a cooler time or keep it short.
Choose shade and water
Pick a route with shade and access to drinking water. Avoid relying on a single exposed stretch to reach the comfortable part.
Watch the dog, not the clock
Slow down or stop if your dog seems distressed, excessively hot or unwilling to continue. Follow veterinary guidance for any sign of heat illness.
Can I use my hand to test the pavement?
A surface that feels hot to your hand may be unsafe for paws; check conditions and choose cooler ground or another time.
